How to Rehand a Single-Point Mortise Lock (Replacement for lock in Pella doors)

Rehand a single-point mortise lock used as a replacement in Pella doors so it works on left- or right-handed doors: push the latch fully into the lock case, twist it so the bevel slope faces the correct direction, then release.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Understand Why You Rehand the Lock

  • This single-point mortise lock is a replacement for the original mortise lock used in Pella doors.
  • Rehanding lets the same lock work on either a left-handed or a right-handed door — no separate part is required.
  • The handing is determined by which way the angled face (bevel) of the latch points.

2. Identify the Latch Bevel

  • Look at the latch sticking out of the lock case.
  • One side of the latch is flat and the other side is sloped — the slope is the bevel.
  • The bevel must face the direction the door swings closed so the latch can ride over the strike plate.

3. Push the Latch Into the Lock Case

  • Press the latch all the way into the lock case until it is fully retracted.
  • Hold it in this position so the latch can be rotated freely.

4. Twist the Latch and Release

  • While the latch is held in, twist it 180 degrees so the bevel faces the correct direction for your door.
  • Release the latch and let it spring back out of the lock case.
  • Confirm the bevel is now oriented to match the swing of the door before installing the lock.
Tip: Test the hardware operation before you fully tighten everything, so you can make adjustments without disassembling again.
