The Croft doors were thinner than other doors and the shim is necessary to make the lockset work properly.

The Croft® Alum. 301 series door had a 7/8'' thick door style
The original inside latch was flush
The outside was a raised extruded aluminum pull
This 1/8'' spacer will let this latch tighten securely to the door style.
