Overview of shootbolt-style multipoint locking devices: shootbolts operate at the top and/or bottom of the door, extending into the floor or top jamb strikes. Length is determined by measuring handle height (distance from door bottom to center of handle) before sizing the lock body.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. What a Locking Device Does

  • Multipoint locks come with a variety of locking options — this guide covers the shootbolt style.
  • A locking device is any mechanism that locks the door by engaging with a strike.
  • On a multipoint lock, the locking devices are connected to the main gear at the spindle hole, so they are all controlled by lifting the handle.

2. How a Shootbolt Locking Device Works

  • Shootbolts operate at the top and/or bottom of the door.
  • When the handle is lifted, the bolts extend into a strike in the floor or top jamb, holding the door securely in place.

3. Match the Shootbolt to the Correct Strike

  • A strike is the lock or latch receiver secured in the door jamb (or the floor for a bottom shootbolt).
  • Different locking devices require different strikes — shootbolts can use a couple of different strike styles, so confirm which one matches yours before ordering.
  • The locking positions on a shootbolt multipoint lock are at the farthest endpoints of the lock body.

4. Measure the Handle Height to Size the Lock

  • To find the correct length of the lock body, measure the handle height of your door.
  • Handle height is the distance from the bottom of the door to the center of the handle.
  • Most handle heights are 34 inches or higher, but there is no industry standard — always measure your specific door.
  • In the example shown, the handle height is 39-5/8 inches.
