Installing Handleset in a Door with an Andersen Multipoint Lock

Complete walkthrough for installing a handleset on a door equipped with an Andersen multipoint lock: install the cylinder actuator and limiting plate, fit interior and exterior trim with foam insulator, set the spindle, and verify thumb-turn, key, and handle operation before closing the door.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1 Gather Parts and Identify the Door Sides
- Confirm your handleset includes interior trim, exterior trim, a spindle, a foam handle insulator, the lock cylinder, the lock actuator, a limiting plate, a hex wrench, keys, and installation screws.
- You will also need a Phillips screwdriver.
- This guide assumes the Andersen multipoint lock is already installed in the door — only the handleset needs to be added.
- Identify the exterior and interior faces of the door before you begin so each piece of trim ends up on the correct side.
2 Install the Lock Actuator and Cylinder
- Start with the lock cylinder hardware.
- Insert the actuator so its small cross-shaped head fits under the hourglass-shaped hole in the lock body.
- Hold the actuator in place with the limiting plate, then drive the screws through the limiting plate into the lock cylinder.
- Install the cylinder itself from the exterior side of the door.
- Tighten the screws until the cylinder and limiting plate are fully secure and no longer move.
3 Install the Interior Trim and Thumb-Turn
- Position the interior trim — the handle plate with the thumb-turn — on the inside of the door.
- Carefully fit the thumb-turn over the actuator tailpiece.
- The angle you choose for the thumb-turn is the position it will rest in when the door is unlocked, so orient it accordingly.
4 Install the Exterior Trim and Spindle
- Place the foam insulator against the door, then fit the exterior trim over it.
- Before pressing the trim flush, insert the spindle through the handle hole so both handles will engage it.
- If the trim pieces will not seat flush against the door, loosen the set screw on one or both handles to allow them to slide onto the spindle.
- Test the key, thumb-turn, and both handles to make sure the lock operates smoothly.
- Tighten the set screws on both handles so the spindle is locked in place.
5 Secure the Trim and Final Test
- From the interior side, drive the screws that fasten the trim plates together through the door.
- Operate the key, thumb-turn, and handles one more time to confirm everything works correctly.
- Only close the door once you have verified the lock and handleset function properly.
