How to Repair an IPD Multi-Point Lock

Step-by-Step Instructions


1. Gather Tools and Diagnose the Problem

  • You will need a sash tensioning hook (or thin needle-nose pliers/hemostat), a 3/32-inch Allen wrench, painter’s tape, a marker, an IPD alignment key, and a #2 Phillips screwdriver.
  • Have basic cleaning supplies and industrial lubricant on hand.
  • Set the door in a clean work area and remove the faceplates from the multipoint lock.
  • Note the two small access holes on the mortise lock body — these hide the hex screws used throughout the repair.

2. Remove a Drive Bar (Single Module Repair)

  • Engage the deadbolt to the locked position.
  • Insert the Allen wrench into the access hole nearest the top latch module and turn the hidden hex screw counterclockwise to loosen it.
  • At the top edge of the door, locate the drive bar opening, hook the end of the drive bar with the tensioning hook, and pull it out — press down on the module’s latch as you pull so the bar releases.
  • Retighten the hidden hex screw all the way down with the Allen wrench, then test the lock.
  • If the remaining latches now operate, the disconnected module is the problem — continue with the module repair below.


3. Repair the Locking Module

  • Remove the affected module from the door, then use painter’s tape and the marker to label the side that faces the interior of the door.
  • Carefully remove the spring latch from the module casing without letting the latch assembly come apart.
  • Confirm the brass-finished side of the latch faces the interior — if it is reversed, rotate the latch end as needed.
  • Clean out any dirt or debris and spray industrial lubricant inside the module so it moves freely.
  • Reinstall the latch in the correct orientation and test that the spring still snaps it back — if the spring is broken, replace the entire module.
  • Remove the tape, put the module back into the door, switch the mortise lock to deadbolt mode, and loosen the hex screw to reinsert the drive bar (push down on the latch as the bar seats).
  • Insert the alignment key, pull up on the module latch, push down on the key to confirm the bar is seated, retighten the hex screw, and test — the single-module repair is complete.


4. Double Module Repair

  • If the lock would not work with the first drive bar removed, reinstall the mortise lock, then loosen the bottom hidden hex screw and remove the second drive bar.
  • Keep the top and bottom bars separate — they are different sizes, and bars from different manufacturers may be different colors.
  • Tighten both hidden screws fully and test the lock; if it now works, both modules need to be repaired.
  • Repeat the cleaning, latch-orientation, lubrication, and reinstall steps from the single-module repair on each module.
  • When reinserting the bottom drive bar, do not pull up on the latch — keep pushing down as the bar seats.
  • Reinstall the second module, retighten both hex screws, and test the full lock.


5. IPD Mortise Lock Repair

  • If both drive bars are out and the mortise lock still will not function, the mortise lock itself needs attention.
  • First, make sure both hidden hex screws are turned fully clockwise — gently rocking the deadbolt switch can make them easier to access. IPD locks often feel stuck when these screws are loose.
  • If the lock still does not work, unscrew and remove the handleset (keep all small components together) and remove the mortise lock from the door.
  • Mark the lock’s orientation, set it on a work surface, open the cover plates, and compare the mechanism to the handing diagram on our website to confirm orientation.
  • Clean and lubricate the mechanism, reinstall the cover plates, and reinsert the mortise lock — if it now operates, the repair is complete; if not, the mortise lock needs to be replaced.


6. Final Tips and Compatibility Check

  • Inspect each drive bar before reinstalling — if it is bent, apply gentle counter force to straighten it back into line.
  • If a drive bar will not reseat, remove the mortise lock and clean debris from the grip sections of the lock mechanism.
  • If the alignment key is hard to insert, spray a little industrial lubricant on it.
  • Check the turning radius of the handleset against the mortise lock: newer IPD handlesets and locks turn 45 degrees, while older sets turn a full 90 degrees.
  • An older 90-degree mortise lock will not work with a newer 45-degree handleset — you must either match the handles to the lock or replace the mortise lock with a newer 45-degree version.
