S-Dry (Lumber)
The S-Dry, or surface-dried, stamp assures long-range product stability, increased nail-holding power and improved paint ability. The stamp applies to lumber dried using either of the standard methods: air-drying and kiln-drying. The moisture-content of S-Dry lumber does not exceed 19 percent.
S-Grn (Lumber)
Indicates that the moisture content exceeds nineteen percent.
Sash
Operating portion of a window which contains glass. Double hung sashes open vertically while casement sashes operate similar to a door, via a pivot motion.
Sash Lock
Mechanism(s) attached to master frame and/or sash used to secure window once in closed position.
Seasoning (Lumber)
The moisture content of a particular type of wood.
Self-Storing (Storm Door)
Most common self-storing door is equipped with two panel sections containing three storm inserts which ride on two separate tracks built into the door. The outside track generally houses one glass insert over one screen insert with the inside track housing a second glass insert which can be raised for ventilation.
Shim
A wedge-shaped piece of wood used between objects to adjust or secure their position.
Sill
The bottom section of a window frame installed at a angle designed to shed water away from the inside of a home and seal to the bottom of a
window sash. Many sills are equipped with weather stripping to make the
seal with the sash weather-tight.
Sill Expander
A metal flange attached to the bottom of storm windows. Once the storm window is installed the expander can be adjusted down to the sill of the primary window to seal the opening.
Sill Nose
The exterior section of a sill. The inside of a sill nose butts up to (is flush with) the exterior wall surface (siding). The bottom of exterior screens and storm windows rest on the sill nose of many double hung and direct-set windows.
Sill Plate
For rough-in frame work; the 2x4 located under a window unit, designed to support the window.
Simulated Divided Lites
Muntins, grids or air space grills installed in glass, on a sash or door to give the appearance of being true divided lites.
Single Hung
Window made with two (top and bottom) sashes. The top sash is stationary while the bottom sashes operates vertically.
Single Strength Glass (SSB)
Single sheet of glass measuring about 3/32" thick, sometimes referred to as 1/16" thick.
Spacer Bar
A metal bar which gaps or creates space between two panes of glass. The two panes of glass and the spacer bar make up a glass "unit."
Spiral Balance
A metal tube containing a series of springs and a spiral shaped rod. The tube is attached to the side frame (tracks) of metal double and single hung windows and to the window sashes. The spiral rod can be spun to increase tension, and is used to keep the sashes in position when raised.
Split Jamb
A feature on some interior doors which allows the width of the door jamb to be adjusted.
Stile
The vertical side section of a window frame or door frame, sash or panel.
Stop
A narrow strip of wood or trim fastened to a door or window frame designed to stop or hold components in a certain position. A door stop keeps the door from swinging too far. A window stop secures the sashes or jamb liners in place in the frame.
Storm Insert
A glass or screen framed unit designed to fit into either a storm window or door. The insert can be either fixed or operable depending on the manufacturer and the insert's position in the storm unit. Designed to be removed for easy cleaning.
Stool
Inside ledge (trim) located on the inside of a window and located below window casing. On a double hung window it is fastened to the top inside portion of the window sill.
Sub Floor
The sheathing (plywood, wafer board, etc.) nailed or screwed to the top of a floor joist. The sub floor is the backing of carpeting, tile or other flooring.
Sweep
The rubber or vinyl weather stripping fastened to the bottom of a door panel. The sweep is designed to seal against the door threshold when the door panel is in the closed position.
