Window & Door Terms - H

Hardware
Apparatus used in the operation of a (components of) doors or windows. Door and window hardware includes, but is not limited to,
knobs, locks, operator (cranks), tracks, hinges, catches, etc.
Header
For rough-in frame work; a support beam positioned above doors and window openings. Made by nailing two 2x10s together with 1/2" spacers between them. A 2x4 is then nailed to the bottom.
Hinges
Metal mechanisms attached to the side of a door panel and a door jamb. Used to allow door slab to swing/swivel from jamb. Hinges measured from open faced; position. Edges of hinges are 1/4" radius, 5/8" radius and square.
Hole Saw
A circular metal drill bit with teeth used for boringlarge holes. A hole saw size of 2-1/8" is required for installing most door locks.
