Backset
The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the
hardware hole. Two standard backsets are 2-3/8 and 2-3/4, though there are other backsets available.
Balancer(s)
Spring or weight systems designed as counter weights on a double or single hung window. Balances keep the sashes in a double or single hung window in position when raised or lowered.
Balance Tool
A specially shaped tool that attaches to the spiral rod of the spiral balance to adjust tension. There are several differently shaped balance tools designed to fit certain balances.
Base Shoe
Small trim nailed along the floor in front or on top of base. Three
quarter round or half by three quarter round is considered base shoe.
Base
Decorative trim nailed to the wall along the floor, usually 3" or 5"
Biscuit Joiner
A power tool designed to notch or mortise holes in two pieces of wood to be joined together. Biscuits are inserted into the notches along with wood glue to bind the two pieces of wood together.
Blind Stop
The wood strip fastened to the exterior face of a double hung window frame. The blind stop secures the window sashes and/or jambliners in position in the window frame.
Brick Molding
Most common exterior trim found on windows and doors.
Normally measures 2" wide. Inside thickness is 1", outside thickness is 1-3/16" thick.
BTU
British Thermal Unit.
Butyl Tape
A thick tar like substance used as a glass sealant and as a glazing method for doors and windows.
