Replacing Multipoint Locks in Weather Shield Doors with Non-Roller Locks

Q: Why would I want to replace my roller-style lock with a tongue-version as opposed to another roller-version?

A: When replacing a roller-style with a roller-style, the hardest part of the replacement process is moving and accurately positioning the roller strikes. Because rollers move up and down within the strike, positioning can be a little bit tricky. Tongues don't move up and down--they just extend when in locked position--positioning is easier.

Additionally, in the case of needing to move a strike, tongue strikes are less thick and require shallower mortises; roller strikes are shorter. If moving occurs, the length of the tongue strike may help to cover up the unsightly original strike mortises. See strike differences here.

Q: I have the 5-point lock (lock D in the chart below)... why does the replacement option not have tongues OR rollers?

A: The point of a multipoint lock is to secure the door in more than just at the center point. It can help keep the door from getting warped. Unless your door is ridiculously tall, shootbolts at the top and bottom are enough extra security to keep your door evenly secure clear up and down its edge. Also, the process for installing a shootbolt-only lock won't involve any moving or re-mortising of strikes along the vertical door frame. You can leave the original strikes in place, unused, instead of having to worry about fixing up the door frame when you move the strikes.
