How to Adjust a Spiral Balance Rod

Balance Rod Adjustment

Step 1

Tilt sash downward to expose balance tilt shoe. Follow diagram #1 to disengage balance rod from tilt shoe. Be careful not to allow rod to "spin off" or disconnect from tensioning tool.

Step 2

If sash is dropping, add tension by rotating balance rod clockwise. Apply tension to both sides equally. Do not exceed more than two full turns at a time. Reconnect rod to tilt shoe Re-position sash and check operation. If additional tension is required, repeat process until sash holds in any position.

Step 3

If sash is hopping, less tension is required. Release tension equally on both sides by allowing the tensioning tool to rotate counter-clockwise for one or two full turns. Reconnect rod to pivot shoe. Re-position sash and check operation. Repeat process if necessary.

Step 4

If rod is disconnected from pivot shoe, then follow diagram #2 for position of balance rod before connecting tensioning tool and tensioning balance. Apply tension to both sides equally, not exceeding four full turns at a time.
