Guide to Installing Phillips Brand Double Acting Floor Spring Hinge

This article pertains specifically to Phillips brand double-acting floor spring hinges.

The simple purpose of a double action hinge is to allow a door to swing both ways. The Bommer style double acting hinge mounts from the door to the door jamb. A floor mounted swinging door hinge, the type we are discussing on this page, mounts to the floor.

The floor mounted hinges have a return to center feature which allows the door to realign with the frame after it has been opened. They are also partially concealed. Most of the mechanism is hidden by mortising the door and cover plates on the hinge itself.

Floor Hinge Installation Instructions and Details

This double acting floor door hinge is made for Wood doors 1-1/4” to 1-3/4” thick weighing up to 77 pounds.

The floor hinge swings both ways, with a hold open feature at 88 and 116 degrees. There is an exclusive alignment screw to center the door and a tension screw for weight. This floor spring can be used for commercial or residential doors.

Required Tools:

  • Drill with 1/2 & 3/32 drill bits
  • Saw and/or jig saw
  • Screwdriver #1 and #2
  • Wood chisel

Parts Included:

  • Double acting floor spring hinge (a.)
  • Vertical edge cover plate (b.)
  • Side cover plates (c.)
  • Top pivot and bracket (d.)
  • Assorted screws and adjustment rod (d.)

Steps

Prepare the door if necessary:

Round the edge of the vertical side of the door to a radius of 1-1/2”. The center of pivot will be installed 1-1/2” from side jamb, and the center of bracket will be installed 1 1/4” from edge of door – this leaves 1/4” between door and jamb. The floor hinge needs proper clearance to allow the double acting hinge to swing. Measure and check the door and its jamb to see if you need to round out your door to achieve clearance.

Install the pivot in the head jamb and the bracket in top of door:

Temporarily affix the pivot to the top of the door frame itself and the bracket to the top of the door. Line up the hole of the bracket with the pivot and mark drill holes for screws and pivot. Drill a hole 1/2” in diameter for the pivot to descend into. Screw the bracket and pivot in place.

Install the double acting floor spring hinge:

Align the long flat piece of the hinge (not the foot) with the bottom hinge-side corner of the door. Measure and mark the door where the hinge will cut into it. Carefully cut out the bottom of the door to fit the floor hinge. The hinge should be flush with the edge of the door and parallel to the floor.

Mount door with hinge installed:

Tilt door and insert upper pivot into mounting bracket. Slide the bottom of the door into place. Adjust the position and screw the base of the hinge to the floor.

Adjust tension:

Adjust the tension of the spring in the hinge based on the weight of the door. Use the round rod provided to turn to increase or decrease tension. Adjust the alignment with a screwdriver to center the door where you want it.

Install cover plates:

Check the movement of the double acting floor hinge. Continue to adjust as needed for proper performance. Install the cover plates to the vertical edge and broad sides of the door.
